Collections and Resources

Documents held in the archives date back to the 15th Century; however the majority of records held are of nineteenth and twentieth century origin. These include:

  • Records of Wirral Local Government bodies including the Poor Law and Workhouse Records
  • School records relating to several Wirral schools past and present
  • Hospital records
  • Court records
  • Records of Wirral businesses and trades, including Cammell Laird shipbuilders
  • Archives of various clubs, societies, organisations and individuals
  • Solicitors' records, including title deeds
  • Maps and plans
  • Original copies of local newspapers

In addition to these original documents we also hold a number of microform sources of particular use to family historians, including:

  • Census returns for Wirral 1841-1901
  • Records of burials in the municipal cemeteries
  • Electoral registers for Wirral area 1842-1900
  • Gore's Liverpool Directories 1766-1900 (incomplete series: parts of Wirral included from c. 1830s onwards)
  • The Wallasey and Wirral Chronicle Dec 1888-Dec 1950

Microfilm and microfiche machines should be booked prior to your visit. Use of these machines is charged at 50p per session.
